Sweets, Savouries and The Schmankerl Party at arlberg1800 RESORT

The Dovetail Agency

Whilst many skiing enthusiasts are widely familiar with the ski terrains of Austria, for most the concept of alberg1800 RESORT can be quite complex. This season the well-renowned resort of St Anton developed the new ski lift 'flexenbahn' connecting the resort to its surrounding villages, Lech, Zürs, Stuben and St. Christoph. It is right here in the heart of St Christoph where you will find arlberg1800 RESORT, a collection of luxurious chalets, a historic hotel, chapel, fine dining restaurants, big bottle wine cellar and most recently a 26 million euro art gallery and concert hall.

arlberg1800 RESORT is located 1800m above sea level benefitting from heavy snowfall throughout the season. The Arlberg region is the largest ski area in Austria with 340km of pistes to explore. Amongst the beauty of the surrounding villages guests are of course drawn to the buzz of the après bars in St Anton. Shuttles and taxis run between resorts making St Christoph a desirable location for when you’re ready to escape the party and return to the pink paradise.

The resort offers a whole host of activities on and off the slopes. Some spend their days relaxing in the resort spa whilst others are able to embark on adventurous hikes discovering new mountain trails. Amongst all of arlberg1800 RESORT’s offerings the one standalone experience enjoyed by all is the luxury of the 5* Austrian cuisine. Hosting five award winning restaurants, indulgence is unavoidable at arlberg1800 RESORT with the daily displays of fine dining dishes presented continually to guests.

We caught up with head chef Mathias Seidel to find out a little bit more about the mastermind behind the arlberg1800 RESORT most celebrated cuisine.

·         What is the most inspiring thing about working at arlberg1800RESORT in the Tyrolean mountains?

Working amongst the mountains, its surroundings, all at 1800 meters of sea-level is indescribable. The beauty of the nature is inspirational and this all feeds into my creativity which is of course then translated into our dishes.

·         The arlberg1800 RESORT boasts 5 restaurants, how do they compare and are the menus influenced by traditional Austrian cuisine?

All of the restaurants menus differ entirely – from traditional Austrian home comforts right up to modern Austrian styled delicacies. We hold a huge focus on our heritage and culture and so the Austrian cuisine is a theme integrated into all of our dishes.

·         Where do you import your products from?

All produce is imported from all over Europe – but most is sourced from our home-based producers and farmers in Tirol and Vorarlberg. We have deliveries daily to ensure our guests are supplied with the freshest and most nutritional produce available.

·         What is your favourite dish to cook guests at arlberg1800 RESORT?

Dumpling dishes, of course! They can be incorporated into any starter, main or even dessert and they all taste wonderful!

·         Tell us more about the weekly Schmankerl Party?

The Schmankerl party has been a tradition for many years at arlberg1800 RESORT. Once a week we invite guests into the kitchen with a welcome drink and Chef hat. Guests are then taken on a tour of the kitchen to meet our Chefs and taste our delicacies. We play Austrian music, dance, dine and have a great time.  It’s always the most popular evening amongst our regular guests; the whole Werner family takes part - especially Adolf Werner.
